Location: Halyard, Brooklyn (Gowanus)

This is my third open mic and I’m heading to Brooklyn. A new crowd, a new atmosphere. It is a weekly open mic known as Friday Mic and hosted by comedian Ilana Rubin. I am the last one to go on stage.

It’s my third time, so have low expectations.

Are you all from Brooklyn? I came all the way from Uptown Manhattan. People in Brooklyn are so cool!

I try to make human connections and allies.

Here is what I am going to do. I will talk to you, the crowd, but in a non-threatening way. How are you feeling today? How about you sir?

They are all feeling good.

You are all feeling good. Where are the sad people? Any anxieties out there?

A girl said she was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.

You might feel better after my set. Probably not though. I used to hate my anxiety, until I become lonely.

Some laughs.

I used to fight my anxiety. But when I would say “Anxiety, go away!” He will say “Oh really? I am going to bring my big brother, big Anxiety”

I try to act that out, but it doesn’t really work.

But now, I am lonely, and when I started meditating my anxiety went away. But I miss it now. Anxiety, where are you? I am so lonely. What a sad joke.

A few chuckles. I start rambling about an “Avant Garde” piece I am going to do, then I act for a minute as my polish grandpa thinking in his kitchen ad midnight. Surprisingly a couple people laugh. One loudly. Time for the last bit.

I just got a rebound cat.

Some interest.

Yes. My last cat died recently.

People are empathic and sad. I gotta balance the atmosphere.

Don’t feel to bad. He was 12. He was a jerk. He lived good life. I gave him good food. I was there when he passed a way. The vet gave him the wrong shot.

People are slightly tense again.

But the silverlining is - I got to hear his last words. His last word was “Meow?”, which in cat langage means “The Fuck?”.

At the end one of the comedians reach out and told me he enjoyed my set. I act surprised.

“Really?”

He then feel the need to balance, and says it wasn’t the best set ever, but it was nice.
